Week 3, An Image of Africa: Racism in Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness,” Chinua Achebe, (Castle)

October 15, 2007

I found Achebe’s reflections on Conrad’s Heart of Darkness to be honest and insightful. I appreciated that he went so far as to look at his own reasons for having a limited perspective because he never went to Africa as Conrad had.  However, I also appreciate the reasoning he used to critique Conrad and others for their ignorance and tendency to buy into an interpretation of Africans being an inferior culture that was propagated by modern imperialism.
