Week 3, The Church in the Teaching of Vatican II, Fuellenbach

October 15, 2007

Fullenbach’s depiction of the Vatican II story is simultaneously inspiring and disappointing. The theological reflection and recasting of vision at Vatican II provides needed insight to not only the Roman Catholic Church, but to all who are seeking to develop a solid biblical understanding of the Church as a community of equals on pilgrimage with God. However, it is not hard to see that the work of Vatican II failed to create some of the changes that were hoped for, particularly with regard to “the church’s way of exercising its authority by trying to share it with the laity” (46). I appreciated Fullenbach’s thorough analysis of the Vatican II imagery, its universal applicability, and its limitations.
