Week 4, Colonialism and the Caribbean Novel, George Lamming, (Castle)

October 22, 2007

Lamming’s reflections on his journey to England was one of the most arresting points in this article. Here I found myself feeling a new level of sentiment for the colonized. It was surprising to consider what it is like as a colonized person to go to the home of the colonizers and to see and feel how different the culture of the empire is when compared to one’s homeland. As Lamming retells his experience of living in England, the accusation towards the colonizer for their arrogance to try to implant their ways of life and values on a foreign soil come to life in a new way.
