Week 6, Rahab Says Hello to Judith, Musa W. Dube (Sugirtharajah)

November 5, 2007

This was a helpful article that communicated the importance of not equating or collapsing the study of patriarchy and imperialism into the same categories. It is valuable to see how imperialism works with patriarchy in particular. The reading of the book of Judith in this chapter produced new questions that I had not thought consciously about in the past about how I read the Bible. I think I often read scripture knowing that women will not be referred to in ways that would infer gender equality, writing it off as a historical-cultural reality, and then moving on without a lot of reflection or analysis of how this affects the overall reading and interpretation of a text.
