Week 6, Emergence of a World Church, Fuellenbach

November 5, 2007

“The poor as new evangelizers,” I wonder how this sounds to those in the Two-Thirds world? Though I do not think that language that reflects the reality of social class should be avoided at all times, I do wonder if in this context the use of term the “poor” is too broad and suggests that the poor will always remain poor and that this is a defining characteristic of identity of the Two-Thirds world that will be unchanging. I think it also overlooks the poverty of spirit and psycho-social wellbeing that is common in developed nations. The poor in spirit and the poor economically have and will always be called to reflect to the world God’s unconditional love. It will be interesting to see how this looks as the world church is going through significant changes, uniting the poor from all contexts around their common hunger for God’s mercy.
