Week 6, Response to Sue Whittakers Blog

November 5, 2007

In her comments regarding the “Sign of Orpah” article, Sue mentions that, “we must use biblical principles that are seen across the Old and New Testaments as we demonstrate sensitivity to God’s leading in every situation, not assuming that because he acted in such a way once or twice, we are to use that blueprint for every circumstance.” I appreciate her concern to avoid making sweeping generalizations based on a single interpretation of one biblical narrative with regard to postcolonial and feminism. Though I desire to not absorb these postcolonial feminist interpretations thoughtlessly, I do think that what these interpretations offer is quite valuable. Often these comments on the influence of patriarchy and imperialism on the biblical text are often not the first to surface in the academy or elsewhere. These insights can be shared without being stated as final authoritative truth, but questions that encourage interpretation to have greater depth.
