Week 7, On Naming the Subject: Postcolonial Reading of Daniel 1, Philip Chia, (Sugirtharajah)

November 12, 2007

The interpretation of Daniel’s refusal to eat the food from the king’s table as a form of resistance to colonial domination was a new to me.  Previous Christian communities I have been apart of, namely those of a Charismatic orientation, emphasized that Daniel was modeling a form of fasting that Christians today can engage in, particularly when praying for change in macro level/political issues. I have not resolved what I believe altogether about this understanding of Daniel text, but I do find the alternative reading suggested in this chapter to be quite important to consider, regardless of any implications it may have for fasting.
